Black - E Gallery (Previously named Blackie)

I have never previously gone to the Black - E gallery I didn’t no that it was open I thought it was being refurbished. I did go and see a piece there during the biennial (a paper house) but I thought the artist was just using a derelict space.

Combination between a contemporary arts centre and community centre/youth centre.

The building was once a wooden chapel built in 1811 which then burned down in 1840. 18 months later it was rebuilt as Great George Street Congregational Church and then opened as the Black - E in 1968 as the UKs first community arts project by Wendy and Bill Harpe with help from Sir John Moore.

It was opened to bring children in and to encourage them to experiment and have the courage and confidence to go out and make something of them selfs. The doors are open to anyone who wants to get involved.

The building is in the progress of being refurbished at the same time as running. I hope while they are doing the work they don’t cover up all the aspects of its previous life because its a very interesting building and very large. The main area which need to be done up is what will be the entrance there is going to be large sliding glass doors into the rounded staircase which is similar to the atrium at the Guggenheim with the stairs spiraling up the sides. This area will also be a gallery space.

The Black - E has various methods of funding city council, independent charity, arts council, donations and charges to people using the spaces for functions ranging from around £50 - 100 for a babies christening to £9000 for a large corporate conference.

The Gallery used to be called the Blackie which originated from the colour of the church, the stone was covered in grime and smoke the mixed race communities that helped open it up helped to also choose the name. They were unhappy when the name was forced to be changed slightly to Black - E. People were questioning wether it was racist especially in America.

In the main exhibition space were the work was on the wall was large and mainly lovely sets of chance drawings and collages done by the communities including children as young as 6 and as old as 70.

Looking Beyond the Visual Workshop

Gaining skills on how to look at art and to think about weather we are drawn to arts because they are more ‘beautiful’ than others.

The tutor picked us all a piece which we had to work with so we didn’t go to one which we like or already no its meanings.

We were not aloud to read the blurb about the piece but we were aloud to no who made it, its name and the date. We only have 15 mins to answer the questions the idea is to be quick and decisive

Africa - Kenya

Important that the work is two sided needs to be viewed from both sides.

The frying pan was cut up in a way that can still be recognized as a frying pan but also so it can make up the meat/african countries

Rustic made of everyday materials which represent the types of materials used in these kinds of countries yet they would probably never get to eat a steak

Exploited african countries represented by the crate its standing on, the crate looks battered and used. Materials represent the make shift life people live.

The size is very realistic a life sized campfire.

The process your looking at is frozen mid way through cooking.

One side you see a piece of steak and on the crate its just a number represent that we don’t know where are food is coming from.

On the other side is a map of Africa and on the crate it says produce of kenya which shows the exploitation and kenya up in flames.

Th piece makes you think about everything you use everyday.

‘Well Done! comments on the exploitation of Africa by Western governments, corporations and financial interests. The silhouette of Africa, cut from the base of the frying pan, has been painted on one side to resemble a piece of bacon. The image implies that Africa (supported by the workers of its tea plantations) was a particularly juicy piece of meat about to be devoured. Africa continues to be the poorest inhabited continent. According to the United Nations, the poorest 25 countries in the world are all in Africa’ Taken from the wall in the Tate.

I found this talk very interesting the guide was very enthusiastic and informative. With out being reminded you forget that these types of paintings have so many meanings and stories behind them I want to go to more of these talks to find out about hidden meanings in the works for example that red always stands for love etc.

The Walker Gallery opened in 1873 to show the Autumn collection and from this the idea was to make a collection of contemporary art which was bought each year from these collections.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti - Dante’s Dream, 1871

This painting was based on a poem by Dante, ‘Vita Nuova’. In it Dante dreams he is at the side of his one love Beatrice Portinari who had died.Rossetti was known for representing love in red in this image there are lots of examples of this. Red figure leaning into Beatrice holding an arrow that is pointing directly to Dante’s heart which is wrapped in blossom that has not yet produced fruit which represents that their love had not been full, Beatrice died a virgin. There is a red bird flying in an another flying out of the image showing that love is surrounding the chamber and the red poppies symbolize internal sleep because drugs can be made from them. There is also a flock of red angels in the background carrying Beatrice's sole up to the skies.The green represents hope and mourning.

Rossetti had a long infatuation with Jane Morris and drew her many times even if he was trying to draw other female figures they still ended up looking like her this is obvious in this painting as all four women have similar features, strong jawline, defined lips etc.

Important people such as artists would have been paid in ginnies which was approx. one pound and a shilling. This painting sold for 1500 ginnies.

Everyday workers got paid in pounds.

William Holman Hunt - The Triumph of the Innocents

This painting represents Mary, Joseph and Jesus being escorted by the spirits of the dead children away from a massacre of the young to Egypt. The children are in various stages of conciseness starting from the left were they are just coming round. In the background on the hills there are beacons of light which represents a feeling of urgency in the painting.

Hunt was one of the most religious painters and took it most seriously. In the centre of the image is a perfectly round bubble with a picture in it showing Jacob’s ladder which is a story from the old testament, this is the link to the main image which is from the new testament.

Before Raphael most paintings were religious or medieval scenes not from legends or fairy tale. They had to be true to life and nature no imagination was aloud. For example if it was a religious painting it had to be created in the holy lands not just London.

When Hunt traveled to Egypt his canvas didn't turn up so he used Egyptian cotton. When he came to stretch it on to the frame it ripped down The Virgin Mary’s face he then believed that saturn was working against him.

Most of these paintings have there frame purposely built for the image. This one has pomegranates all the way round. Pomegranates are one unit with thousands of seeds which represents the church many contained with in this one belief.

John Everett Millais - Isabella, 1848-49

When this painting was drawn Millais was only 19 and it was shortly after the three artists founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB). They made jokes about and in their works for example in this image he had PRB carved into the chair Isabella is sat on. They also enjoyed it being a secret society.

This image was based on a poem by John Keats which told the story of love between Isabella a sister of wealthy merchants and a poor apprentice Lorenzo. The whole poem is represented with symbols in the painting. There is a white rose coming from the top of Lorenzo’s head and a passion flower out of Isabella’s showing their love to each other. The two are sharing a blood orange which relates to the later spilling of Lorenzo’s blood. There is a dog in-between her legs showing fidelity and devotion which is in line with Lorenzo.

The evil brothers plot a plan to kill Lorenzo and buried him. Represented by a folcon chewing on features of a white bird which it had killed, salt which is a sybol of life is spilt over the table, one of the bothers is looking through a wine glass at Lorenzo tinting his view red, another brother is kicking the dog and nearly squishing his own with a chair leg. Lorenzo is the only creature in the painting with two eyes everything else is in profile.

Ten days later Isabella had a dream of Lorenzo taking her hand and leading her to the place he was buried. She found the body and brought back the head which she buried in a pot of basil and watered it with her tears.The brothers found the head and feeling so guilty about what they did they took the head and left the country leaving Isabella with nobody.

The shadow created by the nut cracker held by the brother in the foreground looks out of place and is in perfect position to look like his penis this could be seen as a joke by the young teenage artist.

There is a special quality of space or lack of it. On one side of the tale there are 7 people sitting they look like they are over lapping and made out of cardboard this is because the background and foreground are in equal sharpness which makes you think its reallistic but it isn’t how the eye sees it in real life.

It will be looking at Modern Art in a fresh way covering developements, theories, concepts and myths from a variety of perspectives. The course is led by Mat Gregory and Jane Morrow. Each week will have a themed illustrated powerpoint and after related workshops, exploring the Tate Liverpool's new collection The DLA Piper Series : This is Sculpture.

Rather than looking at modern art in a chronological way we will be looking at it in a more thematic way. We will be looking at techniques, materials and also the wider social and cultural contexts in which these works have been created and received.

I am really going to benefit from going to this course at the Tate on Tuesdays. I will get to explore artworks, theories and writings that shaped modern art. I will also be discussing and debating my ideas and experiences which I find hard to do, I hope this will give me some practice. I will be learning about social, political, economic and cultural factors that has shaped art history and investigating this will benefit my work because I usually base my work on personal issues but I want to start working with these sorts of issues. I will also be able to have the gallery space in a private viewings each week which will give me the chance to look at pieces of work in an analytical and theoretical perspective.

Workshop in Tate Liverpool - DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture

In this workshop somebody wrote four questions on a piece of art and gave them to me. I wasn’t aloud to see the artist, the name, when it was made or the blurb about the piece. I then had to answer the questions with what i thought or guessed about the work.

What do you think the piece represents figuratively?
When was it made/which period?
Where was it made?
Did the artist make the piece or just design it?

1.When i originally looked at this piece i automatically thought it was just an abstract piece. If i was going to say something figurative i would say it looks like a bending woman. I actually think it looks like a mobile. I find it frustrating to look at because everything about it says mobile yet if wind was added it couldn’t move around without hitting the frame.

Today I looked at a few images and made some notes on how the artists have explored a sense of place, identity, socio-political issues and how presentation affects meaning.

Bridget Riley

Study for Cataract Series, 1967

I enjoyed looking at the smaller studies showing how she was going to produce the large canvases. The graph paper and annotation gives it a mathematical edge. I also like how you can see pencil lines which shows how she was adjusting the image and making it more accurate. Feeling of disorientation - sense of place.

Room 1

Christ Nailed To the Cross, Netherlandish School

Looking in the background it looks almost like a fairy tale with the blue topped castle like buildings and the lush greenery yet in the fore ground its the opposite showing men nailing Christ to the cross. The stone which he was lay on and the skin of the people isn't very tonal but the clothes and objects the men were holding stand out which shows how they were more wealthy and important. This painting was part of a large altar piece made up of many paintings, this is shown in the frame which doesn’t stand out and over power the other paintings.

This piece of work looks out of place in this room it look to modern for its era compared to the other pieces parts of the clothing and facial features look have cartoony look about them.

The Triumph of Fortitude, School of Brussels

One of a set of seven tapestries depicting success. Social issues of that time. Classical subject matter done in a gothic style. In it there is an image of a lady putting a spike through a mans head, not many images of this time show women doing acts like this. The scene should look like a blood bath but its almost like the blood has been sieved away leaving clean coloured clothes.
